When you first log in it tells you on the right side your progress for the next rank. You can also select from the tabs on the top of your main screen to see your unlock progression towards individual guns.
I also found that if you go to http://veteran.battlefield.com/ and input your previous Battlefield game information (login from BF:2 and BF:2142 then CD key for BF:1942 and BF: Vietnam) it'll give you veteran status in game. I saw an unlock for the M1 Garand that can only be achieved through veteran ranking, but I'm not sure how that works. I'm going to dig out my BF:V BF:2142, and BF:42/Road to Roam/Secret Weapons of WW2 and see what it says. I already put in my BF:Heroes and BF:2 and it gave me a veteran rank of 1 in BF:BC2. I'm going to add them 1 at a time to see how many it takes to unlock that gun.
I'm not sure of the total number of levels, but on glitching ranks in game I've seen 40+ rank levels.
They're limiting your max levels in the beta through unattainable points, though. IE, for my next vehicle upgrade, assault, and rank upgrade I need 100,000,000 points. That's quite a jump from teh 20,000 points it took to hit 11.
I checked the leader boards and the #1 position had 1,800,000 points at 56 hours of play time (9+ hours a day when I checked it - 200,000 points a day - at that rate 56,000,000 points by beta end). That means no one is going to hit level 12 or any of the next level upgrades before the 25th when the beta ends.
BTW - 1 squad with 2 engineers firing anti tank missiles and 1 assault with tracer dart gun can stop any vehicle in the game.
